When we visited Oatman, Route 66 was just too inviting to pass up. Between Oatman and Kingman, much of 66 is mountainous and winding. Did I mention beautiful? There are gold mines all along that stretch, mostly very small, some abandoned. But the Goldroad Mine is still going strong.
Known by several names throughout the years
including the "Mother Road," "Main Street of America," and the "Will Rogers
Highway" Route 66 was the way to go for about 50 years until being replaced by freeways.
Started in1926, road signs began to show up the following year, and eventually the 2,448 mile highway would be paved from LA to Chicago.
